CO2 is CO2 and there's no difference. The major difference is:
1. You can't control the time of supply. DIY will supply 7x24; CO2 set can follow the lighting hours as there is regulator.
2. You have to frequently replace the DIY as it only lasts for 2-3 days.
3. It's difficult to control the quantity of DIY CO2 supply, i.e. bubbles per second.
Hi fish fan, agree your point No.1, but I can't find any problem on grass growing or fish living with non-stop supply of CO2.
For point No.2, if DIY correctly, it can easily last 10-20 days. You need to take out your metal tank for refill regularly! I can refill sugar and yeast anytime at home le!!
And point NO.3, it can be control up to certain extend, e.g. from 2 bubbles / sec for first 10 days - 1 bubble /sec last 10 days with correct mix.
Frankly, DIY is no problem on tank up to 24" with 1-2 bubbles / sec. But difficult to maintain more than 2 bubbles / sec for larger tank though!
