What is 濾筒內的喉仔? Do you have a photo? You've done right. Canisters should be placed on the floor.

If you think about it, if inlet and outlet of a canister are very close together, you need either some kind of pipe, or conduit to direct water flow so that water is force from top to the bottom of the canister, or vice versa. I think that's the pipe you are talking about.

You may refer to the attached extract from the manual.

In short, this is used for discharging the air accumulated in the motohead. It will be noisy when there is air inside. It should become dead silent after running for a few minutes when all air is driven out. You should not remove it from the canister.

BTW, your 501 can be put on the same level of your tank. You may try to do so. Though I said that canisters should be put on the floor, this may not be the case for Eden501 as the motorhead is much weaker than a normal canister.

Dear Fish Fan,

It always puzzle me that WHY a canister should be kept lower than the tank?? I just cannot figure it out!
For Eden 501 case, why did you say"Though I said that canisters should be put on the floor, this may not be the case for Eden501 as the motor head is much weaker than a normal canister." What is the correlation between the motor poser and the elevation of the canister position, wish you can shine a light on this! Thx in advance!

The reason why we put canister below the tank is to create a pressure of water flow from the tank to the canister, i.e. 虹吸作用. By doing so, it helps to offload the motor head of the canister.

Ahh.. 虹吸作用 that I know and I understand.
But even we put the canister higher than the tank, the atmospheric pressure will still help to draw the water from the canister to the tank and the vaccum buit up inside the canister will reduce the total head reuire for the circulation. I think the key points here are
1/ We have to fill all the hoses, and teh canister with water as full as it can get.
2/ Then the pump will drive the residual gas inside the canister out and back not the tank.

Again, I think if we have to put the canister on teh floor or below the tank, that requires longer hoses, and long hoses meant higher headloss and then much lesser flow..

Note---No matter how low you place your canister, you still need ot run teh delivery hose back up into your tank, so there will be NO elevation difference between the intake pipe and the discharge pipe outlet. So no more advantage from "虹吸作用" between the tank / canister level.
Only headloss caused by long hoses!!!

If I am right, then it really doesn't matter where the canister is higher than teh tank or vice versa, BTW, Fish fan, you have not advise explain what is the relationship between the motor power and the canister loaction!! Please..

Of course it doesn't matter if all hoses are filled, and everything run smoothly. But it does matter, in case of power interruption, especially for setup that have outlet at or above water level. Also, if the canister is higher than water level, its much easier to have the pump air lock.

Dear Macbrush,

What does the "power failure" got to do with the location of the canister?
I presume the canister you referring is air tight, so in case of power failure, the canister will stop and nothing will happen.
However, if you got a burst hose and have the canister placed below the tank, the siphon effect will empty your tank all teh water ends up on the floor. On the other hand, if the canister is above the tank level, burst hose may only empty the canister, (of course, it may depends on when the breakage happens).

It has a lot to do with it. If there is a power failure, water level inside canister will try to level with the tank, if your canister's pump level is above water level, and outlet is above or at water surface of the tank, it will take in air and back flow the canister. 2 things will happen, a lot of dirt will get into the tank as well as it will air lock the pump. Even if the outlet is submerged, we have air inside the circulation from time to time, if the power should stop while we have a bubble ready to come out, this is also possible to air lock the pump.

Another thing, its very troublesome to start the canister if its not well below water surface, if you want to place the canister above or level with the tank, you may need longer hoses anyway, since you will want to place the canister well below to get it going first.

Dear Macbrush,
with due respect, I am afraid I cannot fully agree with all you said.
"If there is a power failure, water level inside canister will try to level with the tank,"--Hold on a minute, if your canister is sealed and not leaking to the atmosphere, it shouldn't happened, assuming both the suction and discharge are both immersed!!

"if your canister's pump level is above water level, and outlet is above or at water surface of the tank, it will take in air and back flow the canister.2 things will happen, a lot of dirt will get into the tank as well as it will air lock the pump" --Yes, if the discharge hose is above your tank level and form a water fall which I thought is not ideal....on the other hand, if both the suction and discharge is immersed, nothing should happen when the power is out!!!

"Even if the outlet is submerged, we have air inside the circulation from time to time, if the power should stop while we have a bubble ready to come out, this is also possible to air lock the pump.""--- I am not sure about this, if the air void is large enough to cause the air lock of the pump,, then there may already be a problem with the canister.

"Another thing, its very troublesome to start the canister if its not well below water surface, if you want to place the canister above or level with the tank, you may need longer hoses anyway, since you will want to place the canister well below to get it going first."----I am using Eden 501 placing at the same table of my tank, both suction and discharge immersed, I never have any problem as you described. I just fill the canister as full as I can, and start the pump...wa la...the pump will takes 2 to 3 mins to clear off all the residual air and everything is just fine... No long hose and definitely do not need to lower the whole canister when start up...

Thx.
