I want to explain some ideas after reading these mails.
First, all kind of bacteria will live in their specific conditions, like fishes and grasses, some in tropical and some in salt water. You cannot put/grow a freshwater grasses in salt water, Right ?
And bacteria is also the same kind and they live in their specific conditions. When we talk about wastewater treatment, like those treatment plants in Hong Kong. We provide a specific conditions for the bacteria to grow. The technique is to control the conditions or environment for the bacteria to grow and they will "eat" all wastes, like NO2, NO3, Fats, etc and reproduce.
In fact, the main problem for that is controlling the environment/condition. Let's take your grass tank as example, for growing bacteria, you need to control temp, oxygen, fishes waste, light, etc. If the conditions is good for bacteria, may be not so good for fish or grass, the bacteria will grow and reproduce. The bacteria shall attach to something, like filter media, sand, mud or grass, or even fish, for grow and reproduce. Once the conditions is good, bacteria will grow and reproduce and N-cycle is completed.
The commerical product is some kinds of concentrated bacteria.
That means a large quantity of bacteria than that available in tap water. And they shall be produced under a strict contol of conditions otherwise the bacteria will not be good for fishes or grass or even human. Why we need this because of those bacteria is growing very slow. So when we setup up a tank, you can use PSB and N-cycle is completed in few days or put in one or two fishes for starting up the N-cycle and add more fishes latter when the N-cycle completed in few weeks/months.
That what i had learnt before in my job.
