Also,
I read that when people have their UV on all the time, they dose high amount of micro nutrients everyday to keep up with the loss (they often use diy trace mix so cost of fertilizer is not a problem

)
I have a UV on my tank and I am also using diy trace mix. But I didn't turn it on all the time simply because there is no need of it in a balanced tank (hopefully it is...

). Well if you really want to use UV but worrying about the fertilizer, you might consider doing the following: turn on the UV after weekly scraping of glass and water change, turn it off the following day, then dose back some micro nutrients. With the UV running for a day weekly, your tank could get a bit more advantage over the algae

(planning to do that eventually...since I got the UV anyway)
p.s. BTW I am not a "tall person" (expert)...just thought that I should share the ideas...
