my tank:24x9x12 (new tank at 13days)
fluval 104, salarmax t5ho, co2 8hrs/day,
PH : 7 to 7.5 within this 2 weeks
shrimp: x 26
fish : hung kim x 2 put inside baby tank
sun dan x 12
working fish (for clearing)x 2

i am a new hand.
- why 3 to 4 shrimps will die everyday? what wrong?
(water temperature around 25-27c)
- from first day to now,4 "sun dan" fish disappear in
the tank?
(I couldn't find the died body in the tank & outside the
tank as well, is it others sun dan fish eat it, but the fish
are so small body length 1.6cm)
- is it problem Ph 7 to 7.5, do I need make it PH down,
How?

filter not enough or too new, the N cycle not yet develop.
shrimp die have many many reason.
most type of shrimp are collect from wild, not easy to keep in tank.
live fish will eat dead fish body
what type of substrate u are using ?

After reading so much on this website, the answers for your questions:

1. fire mountain stone will make water alkaline instead of acidic.

2. Your dead fishes were eaten by the shrimps instead of "sun dan" I think. I have seen my shrimps ate the dead shrimps.

3. No sure the answer.

4. 480/L per hrs should be sufficient. What kind of filtering materials are u using?

- I have experience, fish street shop guy usually are not honest (but not all), I won't trust
anymore. So it means that "fire mountain stone" sand is not good for grass, right?

-my filtering inside with original sponge and original bio-ring(small pack), but I buy one more
bottle bio glass ring, all put it inside, then all fill it up, no space.

How much water did you change? If you change large amount, it would cause a PH shock which can be deadly for the shrimps. Another thing to check for a new tank is, to make sure there's no Ammonia, Nitrite and low level of Nitrate. Btw, what kind of shrimps are they?

this is my new first tank, i set up the tank before i have read and followed the step information from the post about nitrogen cycle.
-I do, no change water until the nitrogen cycle mature, but just refill up water if nessessary. Actually, my case, when is the time mature for nitrogen cycle? 3weeks or more.....
-PH always stabilize around 7 to 7.5, no big change.
-question is: Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, how to check it? test paper or something else? if i figure
out something wrong, what shall I do? change water or do what else?
-"Btw", what does means?
-i have tai wo chu ha(caridina japonica) x6, tigar pattern ha x 20

To test the nitrogen cycle, you need to buy the Tester and follow the instruction

BTW, means By the way in short form.

Your filter is fine, but I think you should remove the volcano stone (Fire Mountian Stone) in order to decrease the PH level.

Hi benny lam, I also set up a new 24" tank (for shrimp and moss only) two weeks ago.

Lets share the setting of tank.

First I use ada soil as substrate. It can maintain acidic condition.

Second I DIY co2 for plant photosynthesis. (also decrease pH)

Third I used "Seachem" stabilizer (HK$80 per bottle) to set up nitrogen cycle.

Fourth, I reuse the submersed type filter as filtration.

Then, I added 2 shrimps only in the tank after running the above setting for 3 days. (since I found that the water change clear)

If they remain alive for few days, try to add more shrimp and fish(3 to 4 shrimps/2-3 fishes).

This could develop the nitrogen cycle gradually and prevent accumulate too much ammonia.

If the tank hasnt been fullly cycled yet, I wouldnt put any expensive or sensitive shrimps in the tank. Maybe you can put a few Caridina Japonica as they are pretty tough. On the other hand, Tigers are very sensitive, and would die very easily.

PH jumping from 7 to 7.5 within a short time can be fatal, so try to stabilize it. Yeah you can change water if you detect anything wrong. But try not to change too much water at once. Do a few small water changes better than one big change. Hope it helps!

at this moment, i am so angry that the lady (i guess she is boss) 日x in fish street is big lier, she told the "volcano stone" sand is quite acidic which is good for grass(PH down), and also the price almost as same as ADA soil not cheap. When I learn more, I figure out she suggest to me all just for business, for sale this, sale that, sale and sale....$ $.................

I think i am just one of idiot to have bad experience in the fish street.

I hope this website(www,aqugrass) are so many master could organize and host some seminar for the beginner like me, I think many people are interested............
(this seminar is a hobby or business, why not? i know outside doesn't have this kind of course.)

grass369, i am so admire you that you get enough patience to wait for nitrogen cycle(step by step), because when i set up the tank, i really want to buy all fish in!
at fist, I have considered to use ADA soil, but final I give up because I am worry that it is difficult to handle (means: easy to make water not clear), is it right?

now, I think I won't remove the substrate, because i worry the 基肥 will coming out that will be big TROUBLE for me...........

a good news to tell, last night, my fish born a few babies, incredible experience.
