Jaqno has a model of pre-filter which is used to filter all the dirts before they go into your canister. But the recent models have been reported of leaking problem. On the other hand, the pre-filter can simply be another canister. The concept is to put some filtering substrates (not bio-rings) and filter pads inside that pre-filter/ canister to remove the dirts to provide a good environment for building up the purifying system in another canister. Also, you don't have to bother to keep opening/ closing the canister for cleaning. You just wash the pre-filter and that's all. The pre-filter is much cheaper than a canister so that it won't hurt too much even when it's broken.
