I broke my old filter(Atman EF-4) on Sunday(10-Jun-07) and bought a new one(Atman CF-1200) on the same day, all the filtering materials transferred to the new filter. Yesterday(11-Jun-07) 20 新燈 died but others like 飛狐, 金精靈, 紅鼻, 夢幻旗 and some 新燈 are ok. I saw the fishes with problem floated to water surface to breath. What's the problem? Please help!!! Thanks!

some more information.
Flow rate of EF-4 is 700 L/H and of CF-1200 is 1550 L/H.
Since they have the same size I just put all the old filtering materials to the new filter.

Can be bacteria bloom, also could be anything else, even things not related such as too much CO2 injection. Any more information on your observation?

I haven't change the flow rate of the CO2 after changing the filter.
My tank size is 4 ft and the water is crystal clear and bubbles coming out of the plants. So I don't think it is lack of oxygen. May be it is a bacterial or toxic attack causing by the new filter.
I have lowered the water level to below the filter outlet hope to bring more oxygen into the water and turned off the CO2 and light too.
May be I have to change the water to improve the water quality. Right?

Obviously something is wrong with the water, as in all cases, emergency water change is always wise.

Make sure you also use those water stablizer which neutralize toxic elements and heavy metals as well, just to be safe.

Did you wash the filter materials when you switch them over? How did you wash them? How long were they left in the dead filter?

I didn't wash the filtering materials and just washed the cottons with the old water in the filter.
The filtering materials left in the dead filter for around 3 hrs.
Thanks for reminding me to use the neutraliser!

The fishes seems ok after:
1. washing the filter
2. changing 1/2 water
3. adding stabliser

Obviously, lots of bacteria died in this process and caused all the trouble!

My guess is the new filter may have some toxic material - it is freshly from factory
- machine oil... could be a disaster with heavy metal

or freshly out from warehouse - could have pest control chemical left...
