There are two kinds of elements in plant's structure, mobilize and immobilize. Mobilizatize elements are those plants need in original form such as Boron and immobilize are those plants "used" to form other elements such as plant cells. Obviously, elements are all mobilize before they are abosrbed, and used.
Plants mainly abosrb nutrients by differential of chemical pressure between the cell walls, of course, there are other ways such as photosynthesis for absorbing carbon, and also plants are very good at storing nutrients, for most nutrients anyway.
There are also two main "themes" for dosing, one is keep the tank as balanced, and as stable as possible, and another is "pulse" certain type of nutrients every few days or so. I personally keep micro in balanced as plants ain't really good at storing those, and pulse macro every 3 - 4 days.
For dosing micro, I dose it whenever I have time, but I prefer light out to let the plants have more chance to get to available iron before they get oxdized by my HQIs. I will definitely dose macro immediate after nights off so at least the first 12 hours of peak is dark, algae don't get to as much N and P. IMHO, it doesn't really matter for micro as long as you keep its frequency up, and for macro, definitely lights out.
