Granulated Activated Carbon(GAC) is high temp. dehydrated carbon, made of any organic material, wood, nut shell...etc. Some web site said the best GAC is made of cocunt shell, which is pure, porous and mostly importantly less phosphate, and of course, expersive.
Cheap GAC will release phosaphate present in wood, which will lead to algae disaster.
Besides, some agrument on internet said that GAC absorb chelated iron(useful for plants) but do not absorb oxidized iron (useless for plants), because chelated iron is organic compound, and some experience have proved it.
So I use GAC only when I want to remove fish medicine from water.
